▌ Selection ▐
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The Selection can be found, copied, moved,
deleted, replaced and is used to set tab
stops, open files and change directories.
It is the Selection, used in conjunction with
the Arrow, Cursor and Pop-up Menus that allow
WindE to do all of its functions without
requiring the user to type.
Text selection is one method by which the
user passes parameters to WindE functions.
There are two types of information that these
functions will require:
■ What, and
■ Where.
The Cursor, discussed earlier, tells WindE
where to begin a FIND or where to COPY text.
It is the Selection that tells WindE what
text to COPY, FIND, DELETE, MOVE, REPLACE,
etc.
There are several ways to make a Selection:
■ Motion Select──Place the Arrow where
you want the Selection to begin, press
the right mouse button, move the mouse
until the end of the selected text is
reached and release the right mouse
button. The selected text will be high-
lighted as the mouse moves.
■ Stationary Select──Place the Arrow over
the word to be selected and click the
right mouse button. In a Text Window,
all contiguous alpha-numericg text
(including underscores) will be
selected. In a Directory Window, all
legal and contiguous pathname charac-
ters will be selected.
■ Modified Select──Sets the beginning
or ending of a Selection. To set the
beginning of a Selection, place the
Arrow at the desired point in the text,
press and hold the right mouse button,
and click the left mouse button
( CTRL UT on the keyboard ). The
end of a Selection can be set by
holding down the right mouse button and
clicking the middle mouse button.
( CTRL UY on the keyboard ).
■ Deselection──click the right mouse
button while the arrow is on the screen
background or a blank line ( CTRL UU on
the keyboard ).
WindE has two "clipboards" where the contents
of the Selection can be remembered:
■ Find Buffer
■ Replace Buffer
FIND BUFFER
The Selection is copied into the Find Buffer
after a DELETE or FIND command. Text stored
in the Find Buffer can be copied to the
Cursor position by doing a COPY when there is
no Selection. If text is inadvertently
deleted, it can be retrieved by immediately
doing a COPY command.
REPLACE BUFFER
The Selection is copied into the Replace
Buffer by doing a MOVE or COPY command. The
Replace Buffer is emptied after executing a
DELETE command. To observe the contents of
the Replace Buffer, execute a REPLACE command
while there is no Selection, and it will be
copied to the Cursor position.
This dual clipboard arrangement allows WindE
to do such things as global search and delete
or global search and replace. In addition to
their designed functions, however, as you be-
come more familiar with WindE you will learn
to use them as general purpose memories.
